Community walkthroughs helped shape this project
This project builds on community walkthroughs BHA held in past years with then-Commissioner Higgins and Brickell Bay Drive residents.
County project facts
The information below comes from the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) fact sheet updated October 7, 2026, for Project No. 20250048 / Work Order No. 5.
The project includes a new traffic signal, mast arms, pedestrian signal heads and pushbuttons, a traffic signal controller cabinet, ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps, vehicle video detection equipment, and milling and resurfacing. The County states that the work is intended to improve the safety and efficiency of traffic operations at the intersection.
Construction schedule
- Timeline: Construction began in August 2026 and is expected to finish by March 2027.
- Typical hours: Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work takes place intermittently, as needed.
- Weekends: No weekend work is anticipated.
The schedule is subject to change based on project needs, utility coordination, field conditions, weather, and other factors.
What residents may notice
The County advises that construction may bring temporary sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours, protected or barricaded work and debris areas, crews and equipment, and construction-related noise. Public parking spaces within or near the work area may temporarily be occupied by construction vehicles and equipment.
DTPW says pedestrian Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) measures will be implemented as needed to provide safe access around active work areas. The County also states that efforts are being made to minimize impacts and that affected areas will be restored upon completion.
Allow extra time when walking or driving near the intersection, follow posted detours, and keep clear of barricaded work areas.
BHA’s community priorities
Alongside the County’s project information, BHA’s priorities for the neighborhood are:
- Safe pedestrian access: Accessible, clearly marked routes around active construction, including for people using wheelchairs or strollers.
- Advance communication with condos: Timely notice to nearby condominium boards and property managers about sidewalk closures, detours, and changes in work schedules.
- Minimizing disruption: Careful coordination of construction activity, noise, parking use, and access to neighboring buildings.
These are BHA’s community priorities, separate from the County’s project scope and construction commitments.
