City Commission Preview: Items That Will Impact Brickell
The Miami City Commission will consider several agenda items this week that could have direct implications for Brickell residents, businesses, and the broader downtown community. Below is a look at a few of the items the Brickell Homeowners Association is monitoring and why they matter.
Brickell Key Bridge Funding Through Sale of 190 SE 12 Terrace (PZ.3 – File 19520)
Commissioners will consider a proposal to authorize the sale of the City-owned property at 190 SE 12 Terrace for approximately $2.98 million, with the net proceeds dedicated exclusively to the repair, rehabilitation, maintenance, and replacement of the Brickell Key Bridge.
The land is currently occupied by the Dade Heritage Trust, which has leased the site since 1978, when the historic home was relocated there. According to the DHT, the sale would not affect the home's historic preservation designation. Instead, the discussion centers on the future ownership of the land, the continued use of the property, and the City's decision to dedicate the sell.
While the Brickell Key Bridge is already included in the City’s funded capital program, this proposal, supported by Dade Heritage Trust, would create an additional funding source through the sale of the City-owned land at 190 SE 12th Terrace, where the historic Dr. James M. Jackson house currently sits. Under the proposal, the historic house would be preserved and relocated to a new site.
Hydration Stations in High-Traffic Areas (PH.5 – File 19518)
Another proposal would authorize the installation of hydration stations in high-foot-traffic areas throughout the City.
As one of Miami's most walkable neighborhoods, Brickell experiences thousands of pedestrians each day, including residents, office workers, students, and visitors. Additional hydration stations could improve comfort and public health, particularly during periods of extreme heat.
Downtown Development Authority Millage Rate (RE.2 – File 19485)
Commissioners will also consider establishing the Miami Downtown Development Authority's proposed 2026–2027 millage rate of 0.3800 mills, subject to upcoming public hearings and final approval.
The DDA millage is funded through property taxes within the district, this item is of interest to property owners and businesses throughout Brickell.
Construction Fence Advertising Pilot (FR.5 – File 19575)
A proposed pilot program would allow off-site commercial advertising on certain construction-site fencing throughout Miami's urban core. Given the number of active construction projects throughout Brickell, this proposal could influence the neighborhood's visual character.
Encampment Enforcement Procedures (SR.4 – File 19457)
Commissioners are scheduled to consider the second reading of an ordinance amending the City's enforcement procedures related to encampments on public property.
Why it matters to Brickell: This proposal could change how the City responds to encampments on public property. For residents who want to see sidewalks, parks, and other public spaces remain safe, accessible, and well-maintained, this is an important item to follow.
Sidewalk Safety and Temporary Pedestrian Protection (SR.3 – File 19073)
Commissioners are scheduled to consider the second reading of an ordinance requiring sidewalk safety measures and temporary pedestrian-protection structures when construction obstructs or closes a street or sidewalk.
Why it matters to Brickell: With ongoing construction throughout the neighborhood, this proposal could help keep sidewalks open and protect pedestrians from construction hazards. It is especially important for children, seniors, people with disabilities, and residents who otherwise may be forced into traffic or unsafe detours. We firmly support this initiative.
