Another Crash at Brickell Avenue and SE 15th Road Raises Ongoing Safety Concerns
Another vehicle accident near the intersection of Brickell Avenue and Southeast 15th Road has residents of Echo Brickell once again raising concerns about what they describe as a dangerous stretch of roadway that has seen multiple crashes over the past several years.
The accident occurred early in the morning while residents were walking by in the wee hours. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. However, residents say the incident serves as yet another warning sign that additional safety measures are needed before a more serious tragedy occurs.
According to residents and board members, at least five vehicle crashes have been reported at or near the intersection since 2021, all captured on camera by Echo Brickell Condo Association. Several motorcycle and scooter accidents have also occurred in the area, further contributing to concerns about roadway safety.
Many residents believe the roadway's curve, particularly for northbound drivers traveling on Brickell Avenue at night, contributes to the recurring accidents. As a result, residents have proposed a number of safety improvements, including additional warning signs with directional arrows to better alert drivers to the curve ahead.
Residents also note that the Echo Brickell association has expressed a willingness to install protective bollards at its own expense in an effort to improve safety and help prevent future accidents. They have engaged with the City of Miami regarding potential improvements and hope proactive measures can be implemented before a more serious injury or fatality occurs.
The City of Miami has indicated that a traffic study would be required before moving forward with such improvements and has declined the bollard proposal at this time.
For many residents, the latest accident has heightened concerns that the issue is not receiving the attention it deserves.
"We continue to see accidents in the same area year after year," said one resident. "A life has already been lost, and residents are concerned that without meaningful safety improvements, another serious injury or fatality could occur."
Following the latest crash, residents are urging the City of Miami to reconsider the proposed bollard installation and evaluate other immediate safety improvements while any long-term studies are conducted. Residents are also requesting a meeting with District 2 Commissioner Damian Pardo to discuss the recurring crashes and identify solutions that can help make the area safer.
While residents recognize that roadway improvements fall primarily under the jurisdiction of the City of Miami, many are also calling on Miami-Dade County leadership to help elevate the issue and support efforts to improve safety at the intersection. Residents emphasize that public safety is a shared concern that affects everyone who lives, works, and travels through the Brickell area. They are seeking collaboration among city and county officials to identify solutions and accelerate action before another serious accident occurs.
Residents are urging local leaders to prioritize safety improvements at the intersection by:
Reconsidering the proposed bollard installation as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of future accidents.
Taking immediate action to address recurring crashes and ongoing public safety concerns.
Installing additional curve warning signs and directional signage to better alert northbound drivers navigating the bend in Brickell Avenue.
Meeting directly with residents and community stakeholders to discuss concerns and develop practical, timely solutions.
Residents believe these actions can help protect motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, scooter riders, and nearby residents while preventing future injuries and tragedies.
