Trust and Accountability: Introducing the New Inspector General
First and foremost, I would like to thank the residents of Miami for their overwhelming support in creating this office. Your votes and voices have made clear your desire for greater transparency, accountability, and integrity within our city government. This office exists because of your trust and commitment to building a government that works for all.
The establishment of the OIG marks a significant milestone in Miami’s journey toward fostering a culture of accountability. Our mission is clear: to serve as an independent and objective body that ensures the ethical, efficient, and lawful operation of city government. Through diligent oversight, proactive audits, and unbiased investigations, we will work tirelessly to prevent fraud, waste, abuse, and corruption in all forms.
As the first Inspector General, I understand the weight of this responsibility. I pledge to uphold the highest standards of integrity, impartiality, and professionalism. This office will operate independently and transparently, guided by the principles of fairness and justice. We will listen to your concerns, address your grievances, and ensure that every dollar of taxpayer money is spent wisely and ethically.
I am committed to building an office that you can trust, staffed by dedicated professionals who share a passion for public service and excellence. Together, we will implement robust systems to safeguard the public’s interest, ensure compliance with the law, and promote good governance across all levels of city operations.
To our city officials and employees, I invite you to join us as partners in this journey. Our goal is not just to identify shortcomings but to help build stronger, more efficient systems that serve the people of Miami better. Accountability is not about blame; it is about growth, improvement, and earning the trust of those we serve.
To the residents of Miami, this office is yours. We are here to be your voice, your watchdog, and your ally in ensuring that Miami’s government reflects the values and aspirations of its people. I encourage you to engage with us, share your concerns, and work with us to build a city we can all be proud of.
Let us remember that integrity is not a destination but a continuous journey. It requires vigilance, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to doing what is right, even when it is not easy.
Together, we can make the City of Miami a beacon of transparency, accountability, and ethical governance.
Thank you once again for this incredible honor. I look forward to serving this great city and working with all of you to uphold the principles that make Miami a vibrant, dynamic, and united community. Thank you, and may we move forward together with integrity and purpose.
Antonio Diaz
City of Miami Inspector General
Antonio G. Diaz
After more than 33 years of dedicated service with the City of Miami Police Department, Antonio G. Diaz retired in June 2025, concluding a career defined by purpose, progress, and principled leadership. His journey began in 1984 as a police explorer, volunteering thousands of hours to
the City of Miami before officially joining the department as a police officer in 1992. Growing through the ranks to Police Major, he led across every major division-including Internal Affairs, Professional Compliance, Investigations, and Personnel Resource Management. Antonio earned a reputation for being a humble and steady leader-one who led by example, mentored the next generation, and embraced innovation to improve systems and strengthen public trust. Drawing on transformational leadership models, his style prioritized psychological safety, empowerment, and collaboration-creating space for others to grow and lead with confidence.
Mr. Diaz is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Senior Management Institute for Police, and he holds degrees from Florida International University (B.S., Criminal Justice) and the University of Virginia (M.P.S., Public Safety). His professional development includes executive education at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and specialized certifications in labor relations (Cornell University) and human resources management (University of Miami). A devoted husband to Juliana and proud father to their daughter Gabriela, Antonio credits his family as the heart of his leadership philosophy and the compass that guided him through decades of public service. As he reflects on his career, one quote remains close to his heart: "Be curious, not judgmental." - Walt Whitman (and Ted Lasso).
