Brickell Residents Urge City Leaders to Address Surge in Public Safety Incidents

Brickell Residents Urge City Leaders to Address Surge in Public Safety Incidents

MIAMI, FL — Residents of the Brickell community are sounding the alarm following a disturbing rise in public safety incidents over the past week. In a letter sent to city leaders, concerned citizens are calling for immediate action to increase police presence, implement walking patrols along the Baywalk, and strengthen response protocols.

Recent incidents include:

  • A woman harassed in broad daylight by a man demanding she “bend over” — a disturbing act caught on video and reported by Brickell Key Police.

  • A man arrested after repeatedly exposing himself near Raccoon Coffee along the Baywalk; residents had reported the behavior for days before he was finally apprehended.

  • A woman chased by a man wielding a knife near Brickell Key.

  • A local priest threatened with a sword in March.

“These are not isolated incidents — they represent a troubling pattern that is scaring our community,” the statement reads. “We no longer feel safe. Carrying pepper spray won’t protect a woman under attack, and as a mother, I wonder how I could defend my children walking down the street if something were to happen.”

The letter outlines the following urgent requests:

  • Increased police presence across Brickell, acknowledging the efforts of the current Commander while calling for additional resources.

  • Dedicated walking patrols along the Baywalk, a high-traffic pedestrian zone lacking sufficient monitoring.

  • Encouraging First Miami Church and Bank of America to have an off-duty police officer during peak hours, especially as food trucks and public programming attract large crowds to the area.

  • A review of 911 and building security protocols to ensure timely, coordinated responses to emergencies.

“This is not about overreach,” the letter concludes. “It’s about creating a visible and measured response to protect our neighborhood. With the right support, our city can restore safety and peace of mind for the residents and families who live here.”
