See Something Wrong? Here’s How to Report It to Miami’s Inspector General

Residents, City employees, vendors, contractors, and community members can report suspected wrongdoing involving City of Miami government to the Office of Inspector General.

You do not need an attorney, knowledge of a specific law, or proof that misconduct occurred. Your responsibility is simply to describe what you saw, heard, or learned as clearly and accurately as possible. The Office will determine whether the matter falls within its authority and whether additional review is warranted.

A helpful complaint should include:

  • Who: The individuals, departments, vendors, contractors, or organizations involved.

  • What: A clear description of what happened, focusing on facts rather than assumptions.

  • When: Relevant dates and times, including approximate dates if exact information is unavailable.

  • Where: The location, City office, program, project, contract, or activity involved.

  • How you know: Whether you personally witnessed the conduct, heard about it from someone else, or reviewed it in a document.

  • Supporting information: Documents, photographs, emails, invoices, or names of potential witnesses that may help explain the concern.

Do not break the law, violate your employment obligations, or take records you are not authorized to possess when gathering information. Report what you know and allow the Office to use its legal authority to obtain additional evidence.

Complaints may be made anonymously, confidentially, or by name. Anonymous reports are accepted, but they can limit the Office’s ability to ask follow-up questions or provide information about the outcome. Providing your identity may also be important if you later experience retaliation.

Every complaint is recorded and evaluated. Depending on the circumstances, the Office may open an investigation, conduct a preliminary review, refer the matter to another agency, coordinate with other authorities, or close the matter if it falls outside its jurisdiction.

To submit a concern, email MIAOIG@miamigov.com. Language assistance, accessible formats, and disability-related communication accommodations may be requested. There is no cost to file a complaint.
