Trash Receptacles Return to Brickell Baywalk Following Resident Advocacy

After years of ongoing concerns over litter, overflowing bins, and trash entering Biscayne Bay, residents say they were grateful to finally see trash receptacles return to the Baywalk behind 601 Brickell Avenue.

The receptacles were reinstalled on May 12 with support and coordination from the BHA, Commissioner Ralph Rosado, the Miami Downtown Development Authority, and the City of Miami Solid Waste Department.

Residents including Ernesto Cuesta, Aaron Brill, Kelly Baroglio, Federico Baroglio, and Icon Master were among those who consistently raised awareness surrounding the issue over the years, documenting concerns ranging from overflowing trash to litter entering the bay itself. Ernesto Cuesta was recently interviewed by CBS News to discuss ongoing concerns surrounding litter and trash entering Biscayne Bay along portions of Brickell’s waterfront.

At one point, this stretch of the Baywalk had three receptacles available for public use. However, after recurring overflow complaints and maintenance challenges, the City eventually removed its trash cans in 2023. Earlier this year, a neighboring private receptacle was also removed, leaving portions of the waterfront corridor without any nearby trash disposal options.

For many residents, the issue highlighted a broader challenge facing Brickell’s growing waterfront: public spaces require long-term operational planning long after ribbon cuttings and grand openings conclude.

To help address previous concerns, the newly installed litter receptacles will now be serviced twice daily, seven days a week. According to the City, the first servicing is expected to occur during the 8 a.m. period, with a second collection later in the day.

Residents say the outcome represents more than just the return of trash receptacles to the Baywalk. For many in the neighborhood, it demonstrates that sustained community advocacy, coordination with public officials, and consistent resident engagement can still lead to meaningful quality-of-life improvements in Brickell.

As Biscayne Bay continues facing environmental pressures, residents hope the renewed focus on maintenance, enforcement, and waterfront stewardship will continue beyond this latest improvement along the Baywalk.
