Resolution Recommending Transition to Non-Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers for All City Landscape Maintenance Operations and Eventually Citywide

The Miami Climate Resilience Committee has drafted a resolution urging the City Commission to shift away from using gas-powered leaf blowers for all city landscaping maintenance operations. The resolution proposes transitioning to non-gas powered alternatives due to concerns over environmental pollution, health hazards, and noise disturbances associated with gas-powered equipment. The resolution aligns with the city's goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainability, as outlined in various climate action plans and international agreements such as the Paris Climate Agreement.

By adopting this resolution, the City of Miami aims to mitigate the negative impacts of gas-powered leaf blowers on air quality, public health, and noise pollution. The resolution emphasizes the importance of transitioning to cleaner and quieter alternatives like battery-operated or plug-in leaf blowers and manual tools such as rakes and brooms. Furthermore, the resolution proposes measures to ensure compliance with the transition, including incorporating non-gas powered equipment in future bids for landscaping contracts and providing education and outreach during a transition period. Overall, the resolution reflects the city's commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and improving the well-being of its residents and communities.
