State Road (SR) 972/SW 13 Street/SW 3 Avenue/Coral Way Roundabout Project
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will begin a roundabout project this month along State Road (SR) 972/SW 13 Street/SW 3 Avenue/Coral Way at the intersection of SW 15 Road in Miami-Dade County. You can review the project details here.
However, Architectural Designer and Urban Planner Aaron DeMayo from Future Vision Studios has a proposed alternative. Aaron's proposal suggests a five-point, one-lane, peanut-shaped roundabout similar to the one on SW 27th Avenue in Coconut Grove. This design will allow vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists to get around safely. You can review the proposed project details here and or a short instagram video here. One of the main concerns regarding the FDOT project is that is does not address the illegal left turn off of SW 15th Road onto SW 13th Street.
FDOT responded by saying “ Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Within our current project design there will be signage and pavement markings that indicate that vehicles along 15th Road are only allowed to make a right. Our construction team will continue to monitor this movement during construction and will share the results with Traffic Operations staff as needed. We also suggest this concern be forwarded to the City of Miami Police Department for increased en-forcement."
