Miami Sup Makes it Official: Brickell Welcomes New Southside K-8

After more than three decades of waiting, the Brickell area will have a new neighborhood middle school for its families.

Beginning with a surprise visit and announcement by MDCPS Superintendent Alberto Carvalho at BHA’s June membership meeting, the official announcement to the Southside families was made by Mr. Carvalho at a school meeting on Tuesday, October 23rd.

Southside Elementary Twitter Post about K-8 Announcement

Just as BHA’s membership meeting attendees had learned, Southside families were informed that their school, as of the 2019-20 school year, will be officially designated as a K-8 school and be renamed Southside K-8. Parents and other guests were also informed that plans have been made to accommodate the first sixth grade class during the 2019-20 school year at the current campus.

According to Mr. Carvalho, construction of Southside K-8’s new Upper Campus is currently on schedule for opening during the 2020-21 school year. Ultimately Southside K-8’s new Upper Campus location would accommodate all future sixth through eighth grade classes.

BHA, Brickell residents and other urban core stakeholders who stand to benefit from the new Southside K-8 are elated to hear the news about the access to high quality schools in their neighborhood, but are cautiously optimistic about its reality after such a long wait. With the recent announcement of the progression of the Mater Brickell Preparatory Academy project, if the deadlines are met by all parties, the Brickell area (and surrounding urban core) could have the first new schools (middle and high school) in the area in more than 30 years.

BHA vows to continue our work with MDCPS and all other community stakeholders to assure the vision of a “Live, Work, Play and Learn” lifestyle residents of Brickell and the surrounding area were promised is made a reality.

New Year Update

BHA has been informed by officials at MDCPS that the nationally recognized Museum Magnet program will be continued as program offering at Southside K-8’s new Upper Campus (Middle School). District officials have also made plans for housing 7th graders (and 8th grade if necessary) at Shenendoah Middle School should there be any delays in the opening of Southside K-8’s new Upper Campus during the 2020-21 school year.
